Not for the faint hearted …
November 26th, 2008 Posted in At HomeLet me warn you, there is a picture coming up soon that may make you feel a little weak in the stomach … you have been warned …
It’s been very tense around here lately. As you known we are all under quarantine, and now I can tell you the full story. It might look like Macca and I are doing it tough on the lounge here, but at least we can still move around the house and the yard (though we aren’t allowed to go through the gates to the outside world). We still have some room to move …..
I am sorry to say the story is not the same for little Rory though … he is well and truly in solitary confinement. See …
You see, when Rory was in the p-o-u-n-d, it seems one of his kennel mates had Canine Parvovirus and has since gone to the Rainbow Bridge. (You can click the link to read more about it if want to.) We didn’t know this when Rory first came to stay with us. As a result, it was decided the little fella would have to be given trial preventative medication just in case (even though at this stage he wasn’t showing any signs of illness) and we would all have to go into quarantine.
So, on Saturday morning he was loaded into a crate with two other puppies (who came from the same p-o-u-n-d) and taken to a special V-E-T who gave him a shot of Monoclonal Antibodies. On Saturday night, Rory was a bit lethargic – it was assumed this was a reaction to the injection as the V-E-T said this may happen.
On Sunday morning, he had to return for a repeat procedure. Unfortunately, on Sunday afternoon, little Rory dropped rather quickly – so he was put into the confinement cell. On Sunday night – right around tea time, he produced this …
Let me tell you, it was enough to make My Bi-Peds lose their taste for the Pasta Sauce they were about to eat! The smell was something out of this world!!
If you haven’t seen this type of sloppy pooh before (and I hope you never do), this was not a good sign. This could classically be defined as a “Parvo Pooh!” The sign of blood in the fæces is not good.
So … from that moment onwards, we had to assume the possibility that either Rory had Parvo, or was simply having an extremely bad reaction to the injections. As a result, HH began to administer subcutaneous injections of saline in an attempt to keep his body hydrated, and his water bowl was filled with electrolytes. Rory really had no interest in drinking so he was more or less force-fed with a teaspoon for the next two days.
This meant Rory was put on an hourly watch, and HH spent virtually all of the first night on the floor of the confinement cell with him – doing everything she could to keep him going. She was very scared and sad for him. There was plenty of mess like the one you’ve just seen, and he had no interest in drinking or staying awake.
HH said it didn’t make sense, because even though Rory looked like he had lost his insides, and there was plenty of blood in it, he wasn’t vomiting, he still ate some of his meals, and most importantly, he didn’t really seem to be in pain; just dopey (ok, way more dopey than usual).
After plenty of hours of reading stuff on the computer later, HH reckoned it couldn’t be Parvo, but was probably something equally as ugly! She read some more, and then asked some questions, and with a few demands, got some medicine for Rory that would treat what was possibly Coccidiosis. It is not as ugly as Parvo as there is no strong pain associated with it, and it is fairly easy to treat, as long as it is caught in time.
Rory was lucky. Within 12 hours he was wagging his tail and wanting to play. Mind you, his butt still stinks a bit and he is still making a mess, but I reckon the little fella is gonna be okay by the time he finishes his medicine in a couple of days time. So it looks like he will make a full recovery … and we will get out of prison after all!
If HH hadn’t figured it out, Rory maybe could have either gone to the rainbow bridge by himself, or been assisted to do so.
I hope he gets a lot better soon, ’cause there are some very grumpy heads around here at the moment. Lack of sleep appears to cause personality transplants in My Bi-Peds.
If it’s not too much trouble, can you please arrange to send lots of good vibes to the eight other puppies who are still very sick. I hope they all make it too! They are all with one other carer – imaging how tired and cranky she would be right now … maybe she needs the good vibes more than the puppies!

I hope Rory will be okay!
Yes, it sounds like coccidia. My mom has LOTS of experience with parvo and coccidia since we get mamas & a full set of babies quite often to foster. Coccidia has smelly, bloody poop as bad as parvo but no vomiting. Coccidia is curable. Parvo–all you can do is support their little bodies and pray their immune system helps them survive. The rescues here have a ‘cocktail’ of medicines we use including tamiflu which has made a difference. We can have as many as 5 IVs going at a time(the vet lets my mom do it and gives her all the equipment).
I really pray that the other puppies will make it. In the end, it depends on the antibodies the mama’s milk bequeathed them. And that depends on her initial overall health. Usually, if they make it 5 days then they are over the worst and if their white blood cell count stays above 1000 (normal is 16,000).
It sounds like Rory will be okay. If he also had parvo then he is immune for life now. The one good legacy of a hideous disease.
My mom is interested in hearing how the new treatment works for all the puppies.

I hope that everypup can recover soon. Bravo to your HH for being so observant and for taking the time and trouble to find out the truth. HH is the type of fosterer any animal rescue shelter could hope to have.

Hey Charlie, It’s the carer with the other eight sick pups here.
Just wanted to say Thanks Charlie and your Bipeds for taking such good care of little Rory…just so you don’t have to worry, the other pups from the same P-o-u-n-d are all doing well. They all loved the chicken dish HH sent over for them.
I think the good vibes from your friends all over the world really helped!

Hey Charlie,
Just in case you have never heard this, but Rory could have the bloody runny poo from STRESS! Dogs get blood in the stool from stress very easily. The more blood, the stinkier it gets! I Butchy had it once from too many thunderstorms in a row cause I’m scared of them. Snickers has gotten the bloody stuff about once per year, usually when she has eaten deer doo from outside or something outdoors. So it’s still possible that Rory maybe didn’t have the parvo. We are glad to hear Rory is doing much better. Thanks to your hoomans for taking such good care of him.
Luv & Wirey Hugs!
